Small won his first two matches of the 2021-22 season at the Clarion Open. Small won his first match by 10-2 major decision over Bucknell's Logan Deacetis, followed by a 4-0 decision over unattached Lehigh wrestler Jack Wilt. Small finished the day with a fourth-place finish at 184 pounds.
