Hempstead, NY - Hofstra Field Hockey goalie Merlijn van der Vegt has been selected the GoHofstra.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending September 16, in a vote by fans on the Hofstra Pride Athletics Twitter account (@HofstraPride).
The balloting took place over a 24-hour period through 10 a.m. Tuesday. Van der Vegt earned the honor over Lucy Porter from the women's soccer, Luisa Sydlik from the volleyball team, and Adam Savill from the men’s soccer team.
Van der Vegt, a freshman from Utrecht, The Netherlands, helped lead the Pride to consecutive victories last week. Last Wednesday against Sacred Heart, she recorded five saves in Hofstra’s 3-1 win over the Pioneers. Yesterday, van der Vegt stopped 10 shots from going in the goal in the Pride’s 3-2 victory over Quinnipiac.
After missing the first two games of the season due to injury, van der Vegt has started the last four contests and produced a 2-2 record, a 2.92 goals against average with 34 saves and a .773 save percentage.
