After serving as a volunteer assistant strength and conditioning coach since November 2021, DJ Melgar has been elevated to the full-time position of assistant strength and conditioning coach as of May 2022. Melgar primarily works with the Hofstra men's soccer, volleyball, women's basketball, and men's lacrosse programs.
As the volunteer assistant strength and conditioning coach, Melgar worked closely with the men’s and women’s golf and cross country/track programs in programming and weight room coaching, and he later assisted as the acting coach for the men’s lacrosse, men’s basketball, volleyball, and wrestling teams in covering scheduled team training sessions.
Following his elevation to the position of interim assistant strength and conditioning coach in February 2022, Melgar was responsible for programming design and implementation of Spring training regimens for 10 athletic programs, including men’s and women’s lacrosse, women’s soccer, and wrestling.
A Levittown-native, Melgar has been the strength and conditioning staff intern at Hofstra since 2021. As the staff intern, Melgar was primarily responsible for assisting the head and assistant strength and conditioning coaches during team and individual strength and conditioning sessions. He also assisted the department in weight room preparation, breakdown and sanitation.
Melgar’s additional experience in the field of strength and conditioning includes time as a physical therapist aid/assistant at NYPT and Wellness, where he aided physical therapists with patient rehabilitation treatment, from 2019 through 2020. Additionally, from 2018 through 2021, Melgar was President of the Hofstra Exercise is Medicine Club.
A member of the American College of Sports Medicine since 2018, Melgar is a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Melgar graduated from Hofstra in May 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science, and he is currently pursuing his master’s degree in sports science from Hofstra.
