Harrisonburg, VA – The Hofstra softball team came up short against Buffalo in a battle between New York programs down in Harrisonburg, Virginia with a 7-6 defeat in the opener of the Lakeside Book Company Invitational, hosted by James Madison.
Hofstra slips to 1-8 with the loss, and Buffalo is now 5-12 with its win over the Pride and an 11-2 defeat to James Madison.
Hofstra scored the first run of the game on a two out single by
Mackenzie Fitzgerald, scoring
Alanna Morse from third in the top of the first. Buffalo responded with a two-out solo home run in the bottom half of the inning to even the score at 1-1. The Bulls pulled in front 4-1 with a three-run second inning, and another run in the fourth inning put them ahead 5-1.
Kimmya Sims led off the fifth inning with a walk, and Morse slammed a two-run home run over the wall in center field to bring the Pride to within two of the Bulls. Hofstra loaded the bases on walks to Fitzgerald,
Dahlia Palacio, and
Chelsea Villar with one out, and
Victoria Frobosilo drove in a run to make it a one run difference.
Gemma D'Orazio gave Hofstra its first lead since the opening inning with a two-run single up the middle for the 6-5 advantage. However, Buffalo hit back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead, and the Bulls got six consecutive outs to end the game.
Morse and Fitzgerald both recorded two hits in the game, while Morse and D'Orazio drove in a pair of RBIs each, and Villar drew two walks in the loss.
Emma Brennan,
Kailyn Haig, and
Emma Falen all combined for one strikeout against the Bulls.
Hofstra resumes competition at the Lakeside Book Company Invitational with a doubleheader against Buffalo and James Madison, first taking on Buffalo at 11 a.m. before facing former CAA rivals James Madison at 1:30 p.m.
NOTES:
-Palacio has now reached base safely in 13 consecutive games with a walk against the Bulls.

Ryleigh Smith caught a Buffalo baserunner stealing in the first inning.
-Morse's home run was the fourth of her career.
-Hofstra is now 3-1 all-time against Buffalo. This was the first meeting against the Bulls since March 7, 2020, at the Mason Invitational.
