Fort Myers, FL – On the second day of the FGCU Eagle Invitational in Fort Myers, Florida, the Hofstra softball team suffered a 10-2 defeat in five innings to hosts Florida Gulf Coast. Hofstra is now 0-3 with the loss, and Florida Gulf Coast improves to 4-4.
The Pride took a 2-0 lead thanks to a two-run third inning.
Mackenzie Fitzgerald led off the inning with a double, followed by a
Gemma D'Orazio single to put runners on the corners with no outs.
Kimmya Sims laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance D'Orazio to second, and
Chelsea Villar drove a grounder up the middle for a two-run single. The Eagles pulled ahead with an eight-run fourth inning, and finished the game off with a pair of runs in the fifth.
D'Orazio, Fitzgerald, Villar, and
Dahlia Palacio finished with one hit each against the Eagles.
Emma Falen got the start in the circle and recorded a strikeout in the loss.
Emma Brennan also pitched an inning for the Pride, and
Kailyn Haig made her collegiate debut.
Hofstra will face Louisiana Monroe in a doubleheader on Sunday, first at 11 a.m. and again at 1:15 p.m. to conclude the FGCU Eagle Invitational.
NOTES:
-Today was the ninth multi-RBI game of Villar's career.
-Hofstra is now 4-5 all-time against Florida Gulf Coast.
