Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra University community partnered with the local community on Friday, December 6 for an incredible educational field trip day. The day, centered around the Hofstra men's basketball game against St. Joseph's Long Island, featured a crowd of more than 4,000 school students with activities centered on health, wellness, and fitness.
The day began at 9:30 a.m. with the first of four pregame presentations.
Presentation one involved Dr. Jayne Ellinger, Dr. Grace Catala, and London Claxton from the Athletic Training Program in the School of Health Sciences. They presented "When muscles say TIME OUT".
That presentation was followed by Carla Pennolino from the Long Beach Fire Department and Jimmy Goelz from the New York Fire Department teaching students about fire safety.
The third presentation was Hofstra's Chemistry Department and their student assistants from the Student Members of the American Chemical Society (SMACS) Executive Board. They performed an experiment called elephant toothpaste.
Lastly, the Physics and Astronomy Department and their student assistants taught the students about trajectory by shooting t-shirts into the crowd using a t-shirt gun.
In addition, throughout the game the students answered trivia questions on the video board, the in-game emcee had participants on the court for contests, and the entire crowd got to cheer the Pride on to a big victory.
