Hempstead, NY – Hofstra seniors
Tim Hegarty (men's lacrosse) and
Lucy Porter (women's soccer) have been named recipients of the prestigious Colonial Athletic Association Leadership and Sports Excellence Award for their respective sports, in an announcement by the conference office Tuesday morning.
The award mimics the Chuck Boone Leadership Award in football and the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award in men's and women's basketball. One student-athlete, who represents the highest standards of teamwork, integrity, leadership, and sportsmanship in his or her academic and athletic achievements was selected in each of the other 19 sports sponsored by the conference. The winners were voted on by the CAA's Faculty Athletic Representatives.
Earning her second CAA Leadership and Sports Excellence Award, Porter graduated in December with a final GPA of 3.87 as a community health major with minors in neuroscience and psychology. She repeated as the Dr. Sylvia J. Giallombardo Award as the top female scholar-athlete at the 2022 HOFSPYS, was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Second Team, and was named the CAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Porter put in an outstanding performance on the pitch for the women's soccer team, as she was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-America Third Team and was named the CAA Midfielder of the Year for the third consecutive year after producing 25 points on seven goals and 11 assists. Porter's play helped the Pride claim its seventh CAA title and fifth in six seasons while advancing to the second round of the 2021 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship. Porter concluded her Hofstra career as the program's all-time leader in points with 123, and is tied for second in career goals (48) and assists (27).
With a 3.76 cumulative GPA, Hegarty graduated this past May with a degree in Athletic Training. A six-time honoree of the CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll, Hegarty was also named to the Marques Colston Health Fellowship in the School of Health Professions and Health Services. In addition, he was one of four Hofstra student-athletes to be named an All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Hegarty also contributed to community service efforts with the HEADstrong Foundation and Tunnel to Towers.
One of five captains for the Pride in 2022, Hegarty started in all 15 games at close defense and recorded 11 ground balls and nine caused turnovers while committing just one penalty all season. In his four years wearing a Hofstra uniform, Hegarty made 44 appearances with 17 starts for the Pride, and tallied 17 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers.
