NEWARK, Del. – Sophomore
Miri Taylor sent home the game-winning goal in the 88th minute as the Hofstra University Women's Soccer team earned a comeback victory over the University of Delaware Blue Hens at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium on Oct. 13.
With the win, Hofstra improves to 11-3-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association, extending its unbeaten streak to 10 matches. Delaware dropped to 9-5 overall and suffered its first conference loss, falling to 4-1 in the CAA.
Hofstra once again scored very early on, jumping out to a 1-0 lead during the ninth minute when junior
Lucy Shepherd crossed a pass across the face of the goal to junior
Sabrina Bryan who tapped her shot to the lower left corner of the net for her sixth goal of the season. Delaware scored the equalizer nearly 10 minutes later, and the 1-1 score carried all the way into halftime as Hofstra was held without a shot for the final 27 minutes of the first stanza.
After Delaware took the advantage 10 minutes into the second half with a goal by Jill Vasallo, Shepherd and Bryan switched roles when Shepherd volleyed in Bryan's cross, leveling the score at two goals each. With momentum shifting to Delaware who had four shot attempts in a three-minute span, Hofstra gained possession and broke through with the clutch 88th minute game-winner when Taylor collected a loose ball just outside the six-yard box and shot through the legs of a Delaware defender toward the left corner of the mesh.
Freshman
Skylar Kuzmich made just two saves in goal, including an important diving stop in the third minute of action.
The Pride will return to action next Sunday, October 20 for its final home regular season match of the season against UNCW. The match will serve as Senior Day and is set to kick off at 1 p.m.
