SAS: Aaron Cooksey Delivers Powerful Message

11/22/2013 5:24:00 PM

Hempstead, NY - On Wednesday, November 20, the Hofstra University Department of Athletics hosted the Fall Health and Safety Presentation in Monroe Lecture Hall. More than 300 student-athletes, coaches and administrators attended the event with guest speaker Aaron Cooksey, who captured the audience while sharing his story of how the effects of drinking and driving have forever changed his life.

After serving four years in prison, Cooksey has dedicated his life to travelling the country and sharing what he has learned. His story was powerful and his message was clear – the risk of drinking and driving is far too great. Aaron opened up to how his decision affected not only his family, friends and those who looked up to him, but also everyone who was close to the young woman who died in a car accident because he decided to drink and drive.

"In addition to the academic and athletic endeavors of our student-athletes, Hofstra is committed to providing our students with opportunities to learn from real life experiences - both positive as well as difficult situations - such as Aaron's," said Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeffrey A. Hathaway. "Presentations like this give our young men and women a better understanding of their responsibilities and obligations as a Hofstra student-athlete. Special thanks to Aaron for sharing his commitment to helping students make the right decisions in life and to learn from this tragic situation."
