Cleveland, OH – Hofstra Wrestling senior All-American
Michael Hughes, the 11th-seed in the national tournament, finished in sixth-place in the 285-pound weight class at the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships that wrapped up at the Quicken Loans Arena Saturday night.
Hughes, a native of Smithtown, New York, earned his All-American honor late Friday night becoming the first Pride wrestler to achieve the accolade since Steve Bonanno and Justin Accordino did it in 2012. Hughes dropped two matches Saturday afternoon, losing to the sixth-seed Amar Dhesi from Oregon State for the second time in the Championships, 3-1, before being pinned by Iowa's Sam Stoll, the fifth-seed, at the 1:57 mark of the fifth-place contest.
Hughes finishes the season with a 39-6 record. The 39 victories are the sixth-most in a single season in school history. In addition, Hughes finishes his career with 115 victories, tying him with James Strouse (2002-07) and Tom Noto (1999-2004) for eighth-place on the all-time Pride career victory list.
At the conclusion of the Championships, Hughes received the NCAA Division I Award for Most Pins during the 2017-18 season.
Penn State captured the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Team Championship with 141.5 points and four individual champions. Ohio State was second with 134.5 points and Iowa was third with 97 points.
