WCC: Celorio Wins NJIT Classic

Newark, NJ - Hofstra freshman Becky Celorio recorded the 16th-best 5K time in school history to capture the 2012 New Jersey Institute of Technology Classic at Branch Brook Park Sunday morning. In the dual meet scoring format, the Pride defeated St. Peter's, 15-46 and dropped a 23-33 decision to the host Highlanders of NJIT.

Celorio, a native of Scotia, NY, clocked a 5K time of 18:49 to post a 50 second advantage over the second place runner, Ewelina Marut from NJIT. Catherine Cohen of NJIT was third in 19:47 while Pride senior Cara Mattson (East Meadow, NY) was fourth in 19:50. NJIT's Maryam Haque was fifth in 20:08. Mattson placed second in the dual against St. Peter's.


Celorio's time on Sunday is 51 seconds off the Hofstra 5K school-mark of 17:58 by Mary Sullivan at Fairfield's Leeber Invitational in 2005.


In addition to Celorio and Mattson, who ran a 5K collegiate-best for the Pride, junior Kristin Mathis (Williamstown, NJ) posted a time of 20:19 to place eighth against NJIT and third against St. Peter's. Hofstra sophomore Eva Holtermann (Staten Island, NY) posted a time 20:32 to place fourth against St. Peter's and ninth against NJIT. Junior Brittney Towner (Rocky River, OH) was Hofstra's fifth and final scorer, placing fifth against St. Peter's and 11th against NJIT in 20:49.


Pride freshman Lisa Eberwein (Coatesville, PA) placed sixth against St. Peter's and 13th against NJIT in 21:07 while junior Jacklyn McKnight (North Massapequa, NY) was 11th against St. Peter's and 18th against NJIT as Hofstra's final place holder in 21:54. Junior Elizabeth Jerome (Northport, NY) was 12th against St. Peter's and 20th against NJIT..


Hofstra returns to action on Friday, October 5 when they compete in the 2012 Metropolitan Conference Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Race time is 2:30 p.m.
