The 1975-76 men's basketball squad, coached by Roger Gaeckler, went 18-12 and earned the program its first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament appearance (fifth overall). Hofstra won the East Coast Conference championship, winning three games in the tournament including a 79-72 victory over Temple in the finals. The squad took a six-game win streak into the NCAA Tournament before dropping a narrow 80-78 overtime decision to Connecticut in the opening round in Providence, Rhode Island.
The team was led by Hofstra Hall of Famers Rich Laurel (Class of 2009) and John Irving (Class of 2011) and also featured 1,000-point scorer Ken Rood and 1976 Utah Jazz draft pick Bernard Tomlin.
