RUDY FIORVANTI
Rudy Fiorvanti was a three-sport athlete at Hofstra from 1972 to 1975, competing in football, baseball and lacrosse. Rudy began his collegiate career at Nassau Community College, where he was an undefeated member of the wrestling team and was ranked second in the nation.
As a member of the Hofstra Wrestling team, Rudy served as team captain and was a NCAA Qualifier at 177 pounds in 1975. He won a first round match and would also earn All-East Coast Conference accolades on the mat.
A defensive lineman on the gridiron, Rudy served as a game captain. During his tenure the team won 14 games including an 8-3 mark in 1973.
Rudy also captained the lacrosse team, where he was a close defenseman and midfielder, and helped the squad to the NCAA Tournament in 1973, 1974 and 1975. The 1973 team posted a 12-2 record and was ranked fifth in the nation. The 1974 team was ranked seventh with a 9-3 record, while the 1975 squad was sixth-ranked at 10-3.
Following graduation, Rudy served as a lifeguard at Tobay Beach for more than 30 years and was involved in beach competition teams and helped Tobay win numerous championships. He also was the founder of Action Fitness, a sports and fitness superstore, and was the managing editor for The Mat Slap, a wrestling website and annual publication.
Rudy, who wrestled at Massapequa High School for former Hofstra Coach Al Bevilacqua, passed away in 2007 at the age of 55 after a battle with leukemia. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, sons, Michael and Patrick, and daughters, Annie and Christie.
Rudy's connection to Hofstra remained strong as Annie Fiorvanti was the University's director of student-athlete services and the strength and conditioning room of the Teague Ryan Wrestling Complex has been named in his honor.
