Lizanne Murphy, a women's basketball student-athlete from 2003 to 2007, recorded 1,245 points and 988 rebounds during her career. She is the Pride's fourth all-time leading rebounder and is one of just 25 players in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points, ranking 15th all-time.
A Third Team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection in 2005, Murphy helped Hofstra to two WNIT appearances including a trip to the quarterfinals in 2007. She was also part of the Hofstra team that upset nationally ranked Michigan State in 2006 for the first win over a ranked opponent in program history.
As a freshman in 2003-04, Murphy played in 25 games with 23 starts and averaged 7.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. She ranked second on the team in rebounding and was second with 34 steals.
Murphy started all 29 games as a sophomore and averaged a double-double with 11.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. She also displayed an ability to distribute and dished out 77 assists. Murphy led the CAA in rebounding in 2004-05, ranked 13th in scoring, and fifth in field goal percentage (.450) on her way to third team all-conference honors.
In 2005-06 Murphy helped the Pride to their first-ever WNIT appearance, averaging 10.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. She ranked third on the team in scoring, was second in rebounding and steals (46), and third with 82 assists.
Closing out her career in 2006-07, Murphy helped the Pride to a school Division I record 26 victories and to the WNIT Quarterfinals. She averaged a team-best 8.7 rebounds per game and was third in scoring at 11.4 points. She also contributed 72 assists and 44 steals. Murphy's 8.7 rebounds per game ranked fifth in the CAA.
Murphy, who graduated with a degree in biology and had minors in chemistry, French, and psychology, was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, and was named to the CAA Women's Basketball All-Academic Team on two occasions.
Following graduation, Murphy enjoyed an extensive professional career overseas, playing in Finland, Lithuania, Slovakia, Poland, and France. She also played for more than a decade on Team Canada. Murphy competed in nearly 150 games for her home country and was a two-time Olympian, playing on the 2012 and 2016 Canadian Olympic teams. She is the only two-time Olympian in Hofstra Athletics history and one of just three Olympians in total. Murphy is also a Pan American Games Gold Medalist and won four international medals competing with Canada over her career.
Murphy, a native of Beaconsfield, Quebec, currently works for the Canadian Olympic Committee as manager, national sport organization services and serves on multiple boards of directors in local and provincial not-for-profit organizations.
