Linda Brymer was a four-year, three-sport athlete from 1974 to 1978 and competed on the women’s basketball, volleyball and softball teams. She captained all three squads and was named Hofstra’s top female all-around athlete as a senior.

She was part of the inaugural volleyball team, which began as a club team and became an intercollegiate program in 1976. The team posted a 21-4 record over her final two seasons and Brymer was named team Most Valuable Player in 1977. As a member of the basketball squad, she also earned team MVP accolades as well.

Following graduation from Hofstra with a degree in physical education, Brymer joined the Nassau County Police Department as a police officer. After two years, she became a physical training and defensive tactic instructor in the Nassau County Police Academy. Brymer held that position for 30 years, and trained more than 3000 police officers. After 32 years of service, she recently retired from the Police Academy in December 2014.

Athletic competition remained in the forefront of Brymer’s post-Hofstra life as she participated in many challenging events over the years. Among them was placing first at the Bev Francis Bodybuilding Competition, which was held at Hofstra, in 1990. In 1994 she ran the New York City Marathon and was the first Queens woman to finish. Overall, she finished 77th out of thousands of other competitors in that race.  In 1997 she completed the Eco-Challenge Adventure Race in a team of four. The race consisted of 330 miles of hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, zip lining, kayaking, white water rafting and canoeing while navigating through the Australian Outback with a map and a compass.

Brymer, who was part of Hofstra’s inaugural freshman class in the physical education program, resides in Long Beach, New York, where she is pursuing her latest passion – surfing. She has three children – Shay, Kasey and Zack.
