IRVING BURTON
Irving Burton, a 1952 graduate, was a member of the Baseball and Basketball teams from 1949 through 1952. He was named the 1951 Metropolitan Baseball Conference Most Outstanding Pitcher and set the conference record for strikeouts. Irving was also an All-New York State selection in baseball. An outstanding basketball player, he led the team in rebounding for three consecutive seasons.
Following graduation, Irving signed a professional baseball contract with the New York Giants and played professionally for five years. After retiring from professional baseball, Irving worked in civil service for more than 35 years. He began his civil service career with the Nassau County Department of Assessment in Mineola, New York, as a field worker for eight years. He then spent the next 27 years as the office supervisor for business properties.
