LANCE SCHULTERS
A strong safety on the football team for two years (1996 and 1997), Lance Schulters was a two-time All-America selection and the 1997 I-AA Independent Defensive Player of the Year.
He recorded a team-high 145 tackles in 1997 and added four interceptions in leading the team to a #14 ranking and a I-AA Playoff berth. His fine play earned him first team All-America selections from the Walter Camp Football Foundation and The Sports Network, and second team honors from the Associated Press. Schulters was selected to play in the Kelly Tires Blue-Grey Classic and was also the runner-up for the Buck Buchanan Award, which is presented to the I-AA Defensive Player of the Year.
The recipient of the 1997 Iron Mike Award as Hofstra’s Most Valuable Player, Schulters also was named the team’s Defensive Player of the Year by WGBB Radio.
Schulters had an immediate impact on the team in 1996 as he posted a squad-best five interceptions and added 76 tackles, which was second on the team. He earned first team All-I-AA Independent accolades and was also a third team All-America selection by The Sports Network and The Football Gazette.
A native of Brooklyn, New York, Schulters began his collegiate career at Nassau Community College, where he was a two-year starter at safety for the Lions.
Schulters was picked in the fourth round of the 1998 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, enjoyed a decade-long professional career and was a two-time Pro Bowl selection. At the time he was just the sixth Hofstra Football player to be drafted into the NFL and the first since Tony Garay in 1971. During his professional career Schulters played for the 49ers, the Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints.
Following his retirement from the NFL, Schulters was a defensive backs coach at Bryant University during the 2011 season.
Schulters has three children – Kshawn, Unique and Kayanna – with Sherrice Schulters.
