Laurel graduated from Hofstra in 1977 as one of the program's all-time greatest scorers. He tallied 2,102 points in his four years at Hofstra, including a school record 30.3 points per game in 1976-77, which ranked third in the country that season. His 2,102 points currently ranks him fourth on the Pride's all-time scoring list, while his 908 points as a senior in 1976-77 ranks first for a single season.
 
Laurel led the program to its first two NCAA Division I Tournament berths in 1976 and 1977, after capturing East Coast Conference championships, and scored 35 points in a loss to Notre Dame in the first round of the 1977 NCAA Tournament. He earned the Haggerty Award in 1977, given to the top player in the Metropolitan New York Area, and was drafted in the first round of the NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers before playing for the Milwaukee Bucks. He currently lives in Belgium, where he coaches basketball.
