MBB: UNCW Holds Off Hofstra In Pride's Home Finale

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra had four players in double-figures led by Justin Wright-Foreman's 26 points, but it was not enough as Colonial Athletic Association-leading UNCW held off the Pride, 83-76, Saturday evening at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Hofstra fell to 13-16 overall and 5-11 in the CAA. UNCW improved to 24-5 and 13-3 in league action.

Wright-Foreman, who scored 20 or more points for the ninth straight game, was 15-15 from the free throw line. Eli Pemberton had 17 points and six rebounds, while Deron Powers posted 15 points. Rokas Gustys had a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Seahawks and the Pride played a tight first half that featured eight tie scores and two lead changes. The score was tied at 17 with 11:34 to go following two free throws from Wright-Foreman. The teams basically traded baskets for the next several minutes as neither team held more than a two-point advantage until UNCW went ahead, 29-25, with 5:54 to go on Ambrose Mosely's fast break layup.

The Seahawks took a 36-31 lead on a Jordan Ingram three-pointer with 4:02 to go. Brian Bernardi answered with a three of his own, but Ingram drained his second three in as many trips to maintain the five point advantage, 39-34. Jordan Talley gave UNCW its largest lead of the half, 46-38, with a layup with two seconds to play.

Hofstra scored the first six points of the second half to pull within two, 46-44, with 16:54 on the clock following a pair of free throws from Wright-Foreman.  After the Seahawks went back up by five, 49-44, Powers brought the Pride back to within two (49-47) with a three-pointer with 14:49 to play. Hofstra would cut the deficit to one, 52-51, on a put back from Pemberton. But UNCW scored 10 straight points over the next 4:02 to build a 62-51 lead with 9:15 to go.

The Pride would use a 10-2 run over the next 3:08 to cut the deficit to three, 64-61, with 5:45 to go after a free throw from Hunter Sabety. The Pride trailed by four, 67-63, before Pemberton converted a three-point play to make it a one-point game, 67-66, with 4:28 to go.

C.J. Bryce put the Seahawks back up by three, 69-66, with a pair of free throws with 3:51 to play. The visitors extended the lead to five, 71-66, 25 seconds later after Chris Flemmings' two free throws. A Pemberton free throw made it a four-point UNCW lead and after an empty trip for the Seahawks, Wright-Foreman converted two free throws with 2:29 to play to make it a two-point game, 71-69.

The free throw fest continued as Bryce bumped the UNCW lead to four, 73-69, with a pair with 2:18 to play. Gustys ended the free throw streak with a layup, but Bryce hit a jumper in response to maintain the four-point lead. Wright-Foreman would make it a one-point game with three free throws with 1:33 to go, but Bryce answered again by following his own miss for a layup with 1:12 on the clock.

Gustys' layup with 47 ticks left got the Pride back to within one, 77-76. But Mosley tipped in a miss from Bryce for a 79-76 lead and then UNCW grabbed a defensive rebound on Hofstra's ensuing possession to get the ball back with 9 second to play. Denzel Ingram sealed the win with two free throws and Mosley added two free throws with under a second to play to account for the final score.

Flemmings had a game-high 27 points for UNCW and Bryce chipped in with 23 points and seven rebounds. Jordon Talley added 14 points for the Seahawks.
