Hempstead, NY – Hofstra's sixth-ranked senior Michael Hughes (14-0) won all three of his matches at 285 pounds as the Pride recorded a 1-2 slate at the 2017 Hofstra Duals at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex Sunday afternoon.

Hofstra (2-4, 1-1) defeated The Citadel, 43-6 before falling to Campbell, 30-9 and Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association foe Pennsylvania, 34-8. The Quakers of Penn were a perfect 3-0 in the Duals, defeating Campbell, 16-15 and The Citadel, 35-10 in addition to the Hofstra victory. Campbell was 1-1 while The Citadel was 0-2.

In the Pride's first match of the day against the Citadel, after Hofstra dropped the first match of the contest at 149, the Pride rattled off four consecutive victories including pins by sophomore Sage Heller at 165, red-shirt freshman Anthony Olivieri at 174 and red-shirt junior Cory Damiana at 184 to open up a 21-3 lead. Hughes would seventh win by fall and the Hofstra would add wins by forfeit at 125 and 133 and a major decision by red-shirt freshman Charlie Kane at 141 for the 43-6 rout.

Hofstra ran into a solid Campbell squad that was angry after their one-point loss to Penn in their first round. In this contest, the Pride won its first match by red-shirt junior Connor Muli at 149 before dropping four consecutive matches to slip behind 15-3. After red-shirt junior Nezar Haddad and Hughes posted decisions at 197 and 285, respectively, to close the gap to 15-9, the Camels swept the final three matches, including pins at 133 and 141 for the 30-9 victory.

The Pride spotted the Quakers of Penn a 20-3 lead after six matches with 165-pound, Sage Heller's last second takedown in a 6-5 win at 165 the lone early bright spot. After Michael Hughes tallied his first technical fall of the season, Penn closed out the match with decision, a win by fall and a technical fall for the 34-8 final score.

Hofstra will return to action on Saturday, December 10 when they face George Mason in the Theater at Madison Square Garden in the 2017 Grapple at the Garden. Match time is 5:45 p.m.
