Richmond, VA – Hofstra senior
Finn Sullivan has been voted the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Year and seven Pride student-athletes were named to All-CAA teams, including a league-high five on the first team, the CAA announced Wednesday night.
In addition to Sullivan, who was also named to the All-CAA first team, senior midfielder
Korey Hendrickson, junior attackman
Josh Byrne and face-off specialist
Kris Clarke, and sophomore goalie
Jack Concannon were also named to the All-CAA first team. Senior attackman
Sam Llinares and midfielder
Brian von Bargen were named to the All-CAA second team. Clarke was also named to the CAA Men's Lacrosse All-Academic team for his excellence in the classroom.
Sullivan earned his third All-CAA honor after a first team selection in 2014 and a second team pick in 2015. The West Roxbury, MA native anchored a young Pride defense that ranked 13th in goals against average this season. He started all 14 games picking up 43 ground balls, which is second on the team, and ranks 30th in Division I with 20 caused turnovers. Sullivan was also a CAA All-Rookie team selection in 2013.
Hendrickson, who is enjoying the best season of his career in 2016, earned his first All-CAA honor with his first team selection. The Farmingdale, NY native also started all 14 games and is second on the team with career-highs of 27 goals and 35 points to go with his eight assists. He was also second in the CAA with 14 goals and 16 points in the five conference games this season. Hendrickson scored a career-high six goals against Fairfield last month.
Byrne, who came to Hofstra from nearby Nassau Community College last fall, earned his first All-CAA honor after leading the Pride with 30 goals, 14 assists and 44 points while starting all 14 games. The New Westminster, BC, Canada native recorded five or more points in five games this season including five goals against Princeton, four goals and two assists at North Carolina, three goals and four assists against NJIT and two goals and four assists against Delaware. He currently ranks second in the CAA in goals and points and is fourth in assists.
Clarke earned his second consecutive All-CAA first team selection in 2016. The Bellmore, NY native, who was a CAA All-Rookie team pick in 2014, leads the CAA in both ground balls with 81 and face-off winning percentage (150-263) with a .570 mark. He ranks 11th in the nation in ground balls per game, and 22nd in face-off winning percentage. Clarke has won more than 50 percent of his face-offs ninth time this season including a 14-for 19 game against NJIT and a 14-for-21 contest against Georgetown.
Sophomore
Jack Concannon, who took over for three-year starter
Chris Selva following his graduation last May, earned his first All-CAA first team honor. The Lindenhurst, NY native leads the CAA in save percentage with a .581 mark on 161 saves, and is second in goals against average with an 8.38 slate while starting all 14 games and playing all but 15 minutes in 2016. He has recorded double-digit saves in nine of the 14 contests including a career-high 16 stops against Fairfield, 15 against Princeton and 14 against Ohio State, Georgetown and Vermont. In conference games this season, Concannon leads the league in goals against average (7.31), saves (57) and save percentage (.606).
Senior
Sam Llinares headlines the All-CAA second team with his third all-conference honor after earning All-CAA first team honors in 2014 and 2015. The 2016 CAA Player of the Year has been slowed by injury this season but is still second on the team with 27 goals and 35 points to go with his eight assists. Llinares, a native of Hauppauge, NY who also earned CAA All-Rookie team accolades in 2013, ranks fifth in the conference in goals and points this season. He has tallied multi-goal games seven times and multi-point contests 10 times this season including five goals and one assist against St. John's and NJIT and five goals at North Carolina. Two weeks ago at UMass, Llinares became just the ninth player in school history to record 100 goals in his career. He also ranks fifth in career assists with 77 and sixth in career points with 177.
Classmate
Brian von Bargen is also enjoying the best season of his career in 2016 and earned his first All-CAA second team honor. The Wantagh, NY native, who was also a CAA All-Rookie team pick in 2013, is fourth on the team in goals with 26 and points with 33 to go with his seven assists, all career-highs. He has 10 multi-goal games including a career-best four goals against Vermont and 11 multi-point contests including five points against the Catamounts. Von Bargen ranks seventh in the conference in goals and eighth in points.
The CAA also announced their special awards for 2016 as Towson junior Ryan Drenner and Fairfield freshman Colin Burke were voted CAA Co-Players of the Year. Burke was also voted the CAA Rookie of the Year and Towson's Shawn Nadelen was chosen the CAA Coach of the Year.
