WSOC: Hofstra Signs Three To National Letters Of Intent

Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra announced that Brenda Quinn, Maya Watkins and Jaimie Layfield have signed national letters of intent to start their Hofstra athletic and academic careers starting for the 2016 season, Head Coach Simon Riddiough announced today. The Pride has also added transfer Brianna Doran, who played this past season at Adelphi.

"I cannot be more excited about this group of individuals," Riddiough said. "Although the class is small in size, my staff is thrilled with the quality. We're looking forward to seeing what they can do to contribute to the continued success of the program."

Layfield, a midfielder out of Bel Air, Maryland, will look to bolster Hofstra's depth after playing four years of varsity soccer for Bel Air. As a senior, she helped her team go 19-0 and earn a second-place ranking in the state while capturing Maryland's 3A championship. She posted seven goals and five assists for the UCBAC champions. While serving as the team captain, she was a clutch performer who converted a penalty kick for the game-winner in the state championship game. She also starred for Maryland United FC '98, scoring the game-winning goal in the ECNL national championship game in July 2014. Her club career also included a long stint for the Baltimore Bays Chelsea '98 team.

Quinn will give Hofstra another local product on the roster. She captained Hicksville High School in her senior season. She was the top goal scorer and assist leader for Hicksville in both her freshman and sophomore seasons. A junior-year injury led to a recovery in her senior year, and Quinn's performance earned her a selection to the West Ham United F.C. soccer camp. A three-sport athlete, Quinn also played lacrosse and ran winter track for Hicksville. She also suited up for the U-18 Long Island RR Rough Riders for six years and currently plays for the club-level East Meadow Soccer team.

Watkins was a Top Drawer Soccer all-star in 2014-15 and comes to Hofstra after a record-setting high school career with 121 goals and 75 assists. She was an all-state selection in 2014-15 and an All-WPIAL pick from 2013-15. She started for New Brighton High School in Pennsylvania and also played for the club-level Pittsburgh Riverhounds.  The forward led her club team to a regional championship in 2014 and 2015 as well as a Disney Showcase championship in 2015. The squad earned a Jefferson Cup championship in 2014 and 2015.

Doran was a two-year captain for the Lindenhurst soccer team and was a two-time MVP and all-county selection. She also earned all-conference, all-league, and all-Long Island selections and was named to the all-state team. The former Suffolk County League II Player of the Year played her first collegiate season at Adelphi in 2015 and played in 14 games with one start. She notched one goal and two assists for four points.
