SB: Edwards Honored With Banner For Career Victories

Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra honored former Head Softball Coach Bill Edwards with a pregame ceremony Sunday before the Pride played Elon in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup.

The team unveiled a banner in left field to commemorate his 928 career wins for the program in a career that spanned 1990-14. The win total is the most in program history and the most for any coach in any sport in the history of Hofstra. His 928 banner is next to the team's three retired numbers of Stacy Jackson, Alicia Smith and Crystal Boyd, who were all on hand with Edwards for the ceremony in left.

With a large group of alumnae on hand, along with the current team, a special announcement was made by Hofstra  Vice President and Director of Athletics Jeffrey A. Hathaway, who announced that the Hofstra Softball Stadium would be renamed in honor of Edwards and will now be known as Bill Edwards Stadium.

Hofstra Head Coach Larissa Anderson thanked Edwards in public address remarks as part of the ceremony before turning the microphone over to Hathaway, who delivered the news of the stadium being renamed for the man who led Hofstra to 15 NCAA Tournament appearances in his tenure.

Edwards retired with a career record of 928-419-3. Under his guidance, Hofstra captured 18 postseason conference championships, including 10 Colonial Athletic Association titles. Edwards was named the Regional Coach of the Year 12 times in his career (1993-95, 1997, 2000, 2003-05, 2007-08, and 2012-13). He earned CAA Coach of the Year six consecutive seasons from 2008 to 2013 and was the America East Coach of the Year in 1995 and 1999.

Under his tutelage five players earned All-America honors from the NFCA – twice by Crystal Boyd (1993, 1994) and Olivia Galati (2012, 2013), and once by Alicia Smith (2000), Lisa Ciavardini (2000) and Amanda Hallaway (2003). Galati was the program's first-ever first-team All-American in 2012.
