Hempstead, NY - Former Hofstra All-American James C. Metzger will be among the honorees at the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum when the Class of 2013 is inducted on April 21.
Metzger will be the recipient of the George Young Award, which is given to that person in sports (who need not be Jewish) who
best exemplifies the high ideals of the late New York (Football) Giants
General Manager George Young. Metzger was a two-year letterman for Hofstra and earned USILA All-America accolades following his sophomore season in 1980.
The Chairman and CEO of the
Whitmore Group, Ltd., a leading insurance brokerage on Long Island that
he founded in 1989, Metzger has been a generous supporter of Hofstra Athletics. In December 2011 Hofstra announced a $1.5 million commitment from Metzger, who serves on the Hofstra Pride Club Board of Directors, to support the men's lacrosse program and all sports via the Capital Improvements Fund. In January 2012 it was announced that the Capital Improvements Fund had been renamed The James C. Metzger Fund for Capital Improvements in recognition of Metzger's generosity. Metzger's leadership support marks the largest gift in the history of Hofstra Athletics.
An alumnus of Half
Hollows Hills High School, Metzger was an outstanding athlete who earned high school All-America accolades, was the League I and Suffolk County scoring leader and the recipient of the Ray Enners Award as outstanding lacrosse
