In 1999-00 Hofstra would make its third-ever NCAA Division I NCAA Tournament appearance (seventh overall). The run to the NCAA Tournament would be the culmination of a rebuilding effort that began with the hiring of Jay Wright in 1994.
Hofstra posted a 24-7 overall record and a 16-2 mark in America East play. The team captured the America East title in a thrilling 76-69 victory over Delaware in the conference championship game at a sold-out Hofstra Arena before facing Oklahoma State in the NCAA Tournament.

The 24 wins were a school record for wins at the Division I level at the time. The team featured two current Hofstra Athletics Hall of Famers in current assistant coach Craig “Speedy” Claxton (Class of 2011) and Norman Richardson (Class of 2013).
